An internal strip out removes the interior elements of a building — wall and ceiling linings, partitions, floor coverings, joinery, fixtures and fittings — while the structural shell stays standing. It is the controlled middle ground between a renovation tidy-up and full demolition, and it is what Master Strip Outs has specialised in across Sydney since 2012.

The work is selective by design. Plasterboard and hardset linings come off the frame, suspended ceilings and cornices come down, tiles, timber and carpet come up, and built-in cabinetry is cut out — but load-bearing elements, retained services and any finishes you want kept are identified at inspection and protected throughout. Non-structural wall removal can be included in the same visit; anything structural is done separately to an engineer’s specification with proper propping.

Internal strip outs suit homeowners gutting a house before a renovation, builders who want a clean frame to work from, and owners of older properties where the interior has reached the end of its life. In pre-1990 buildings we keep an eye out for suspect materials — if asbestos-containing sheeting or lagging is found, we arrange testing and removal through licensed asbestos removalists in line with SafeWork NSW requirements before the strip out continues.

What exactly is involved in an internal strip out?

An internal strip out removes the interior fit out and finishes of a building — wall and ceiling linings, partitions, floor coverings, joinery, fixtures and fittings — while the structural shell remains standing. The scope is agreed room by room at inspection, so you can strip everything back to the frame or keep specific finishes and features in place.

How long does an internal strip out take?

A single room can be stripped in 1-2 days, while a complete interior across a whole house typically takes several days to a week or more depending on size, access and the amount of material coming out. We confirm a firm timeline in your written quote so follow-on trades can be booked with confidence.

How much does an internal strip out cost?

Internal strip outs are quoted per project because interiors vary so much — a lightly fitted apartment and a lath-and-plaster Federation home are very different jobs. Can you remove structural or load-bearing walls?

Structural elements need an engineer’s design and certification before they can be altered. Do I need council approval for internal strip out work?

Internal, non-structural strip outs generally do not need council approval in NSW. If your project also involves structural changes or alterations that affect the building’s external form, those works may require a CDC or DA — a private certifier can confirm quickly, and we recommend doing that before your renovation programme is locked in.

What happens to the waste?

We sort everything on site — metal, timber, plasterboard and mixed debris — and cart it to licensed facilities, recycling as much as possible. Disposal is included in your quote and the site is handed over broom-clean, not with a stack of debris awaiting a separate rubbish run.
