Turn an Unused Pool Back Into Usable Backyard

Pool removal decommissions a swimming pool for good: the shell is broken down or removed, the void is backfilled and compacted in layers, and the space becomes lawn, garden or the footprint for a new structure. It is a different service from a pool strip out, which strips the interior finishes so the pool can be renovated and refilled. If you are done with the pool, the maintenance, the fencing compliance and the space it swallows, removal is the permanent answer.
There are two paths. Partial removal breaks down the top section of the shell, punches drainage holes through the floor so water never ponds inside the old structure, and backfills the void with compacted material, the most common and most economical option. Full removal excavates the entire shell, concrete, fibreglass or vinyl liner structure and all, and backfills with clean, compacted fill. Full removal costs more but removes any question about what is under the ground, which matters if you plan to build over the footprint; anything structural on top of a filled pool needs an engineer’s input either way.
Compaction and drainage are where pool removals go right or wrong. We backfill in layers with proper compaction so the ground does not settle and sink over time, and we make sure the old shell can drain rather than becoming an underground bathtub. Council requirements are handled as part of the job: pool removal generally involves approval or certifier sign-off depending on your council and the removal method, pool fencing obligations end only once the pool is genuinely gone, and the pool should be removed from the NSW Swimming Pool Register once decommissioned. We walk you through each step.
We have completed multiple pool strip out and pool works projects across Sydney, including a swimming pool at a strata apartment block, so we are comfortable with the access constraints, neighbour management and body-corporate coordination that pool jobs bring. Demolition waste is sorted and recycled where possible, and you are left with compacted, level ground ready for its next life.

FAQs
Pool Removal FAQs
Common questions about removing a pool in Sydney
How much does pool removal cost in Sydney?
Pool removal is quoted per project after a free site inspection, because the price depends on pool size and construction, whether you choose partial or full removal, machinery access to the backyard, and how far fill and debris have to move. Partial removal is the more economical option; full removal costs more but leaves nothing in the ground. Your quote is fixed and usually with you within 24 hours.
What is the difference between partial and full pool removal?
Partial removal demolishes the top section of the shell, punches drainage holes through the floor and backfills the void with compacted material, with the lower shell staying buried. Full removal excavates the entire structure and backfills with clean fill. Partial is cheaper and suits lawns and gardens; full removal is the safer base if you ever want to build over the footprint, and any structure over a former pool needs an engineer’s input regardless of method.
Do I need council approval to remove a pool?
Generally yes, in some form: most NSW councils treat pool removal as development requiring approval or certifier sign-off, and the pathway depends on your council, the removal method and the property. Requirements differ enough between councils that we recommend confirming your project with a private certifier or your council first, and we guide you through it at quote stage. Once the pool is decommissioned it should also be removed from the NSW Swimming Pool Register, which formally ends your fencing and compliance obligations.
What happens to the space after the pool is removed?
You get level, compacted ground ready for its next use. Most owners turf or landscape the area straight away; because we backfill and compact in layers, the ground is stable rather than a slowly sinking hollow. If you plan a deck, shed or any structure over the old footprint, tell us before we start, as that decision affects whether full removal and engineered fill are the right approach.
How long does pool removal take?
Most residential pool removals take from a few days up to around a week on site, depending on pool size, the removal method and machinery access; tight access that forces smaller equipment extends the timeframe. Approvals add lead time before work starts, so build that into your planning. We confirm a firm programme with your quote; call 0424 944 944 to get the process moving.
